Recommended News Readers for alt.binaries picture groups

Okay, I'm going to show three screen shots of three different newsgroup downloaders below, all three of them configured for picture downloading. A picture is worth a thousand words, and a screen shot is worth a thousand downloads...

As you will soon see, we can categorize the newsgroup downloaders according to how many pictures they can download at once (i.e. multithreading) as well as the complexity of the interface (power user vs novice).

Keep in mind that these examples are mainly a demonstration of downloading from the alt.binaries picture newsgroups. I'm going to throw together an entirely different page to describe these three downloaders when used for downloading the bigger stuff, like mpeg movies and whatnot.

Here we can see Binary Vortex being used to download pictures of Xenia Seeberg (Xev from the TV show Lexx) from the newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.celebrities.

As you can see, the Binary Vortex interface is pretty simple -- easy for novice users to get the hang of.

This photo shows QuadNews being used to download pictures of Fat Actress Star Kirstie Alley, again from alt.binaries.pictures.celebrities. Oh how we remember her not-so-fat days... You can even see a little picture of Kirstie from her one-time role as Savik in one of the Star Trek movies.

Notice how QuadNews has four pictures simultaneously being downloaded. That's because it's a multithreaded downloader. This allows it to be up to four times faster than a single threaded downloader.

Most of Quad's complexity is hidden behind the interface. There's a "config" button that'll bring up more options than you'll know what to do with!

Now let's take a look at SBNews. Here we have it downloading some pictures of Sigourney Weaver from (you guesed it...) alt.binaries.pictures.celebrities.

Notice the complexity of the SBNews interface. There's all kinds of options and status information there. It's a real power-user type newsgroup downloader.
