Purpose of the software:

This program is designed to let you perform an XPAT or "pattern" search on a news server. A pattern search has the advantage that the newsgroup headers do not have to be downloaded in order to perform the search. Header downloading is usually a very time consuming process. By performing the search on the news server, you can make the server do all the work for you.

Once you've performed a search, then you can save the results as an NZB file, which can be imported into many newsreaders. Thus, this software can be used as an NZB creator, to create NZB Files.

What servers does this work with:

Your news server must support the XPAT extension. Most news servers do support this extension. The most notable exception is the Giganews server, and Comcast newsgroups, which are backed by Giganews. If your news server does not support the XPAT extension, then this program will not work for you, and you will have to use some other mechanism to perform your searches.

Using the software:

Start by opening the software by clicking its desktop icon. You'll get an about box (be sure to visit www.newsgroupdownloaders.com for more software...). Click OK and you'll be at the newsgroup pattern search main window.

Step #1: Configuring your News Server

The first thing you need to do is to enter your news server and account settings into nzbval. Nzbval needs this information because it is going to be contacting your news server to verify that the parts are there. This information includes the following three parts:

If you get those settings wrong, then nzbval will let you know about it later when you push the <Start Validation> button and give you a chance to go back and fix them.

Step #2: Selecting newsgroups

This program doesn't search "ALL" newsgroups -- that would take far too long, even with the server doing most of the work. Thus, you need to enter a list of newsgroups that you want to search. Do this by using the little <add> button next to the newsgroup list. If you're looking for binary files, then best to stick with the alt.binaries newsgroups.

Step #3: Enter some search text

Enter your search text in the little "Search Text" box. You do not need to worry about case; the search will automatically be converted to a case-insensitive and position-insensitive search for you.

Step #4: Push the <Search> button

If all goes as planned, then the search should begin. A little box will popup with the status of the search. You have to wait for it to complete, which may take a while depending on the news server that you're using. When the search is complete, the "Search in Progress" box will disappear, and the search results will be displayed in the big listbox.

Step #5: Use the <Export NZB> button

To create an NZB file, first select the articles that you want to add to the NZB. Do this by clicking the articles. A single click only selects a single article. You can shift-click and control-click to add additional articles.

Once you've selected (hilighted in blue) the articles you want to export, click the <Export NZB> button, and an NZB file will be created for you.

Reading Messages:

There is a <Read> button that you can use to download and display the contents of a message. Please note, this feature is provided as a simple convenience only. This software is not a newsreader and is not a newsgroup downloader. To actually read, download, upload, etc text and binary files, you'll want to use this program in conjunction with a real newsreader like Android Newsgroup Downloader.
