alt.binaries refers to the collection of usenet newsgroups that contain binary content. Newsgroups typically contain two types of content:

• text: text newsgroups contain text messages between persons. They are usually a forum for discussion of various topics.
• binary: binary newsgroups contain binary files, such as pictures, movies, or music, that have been encoded and posted to a newsgroup

You can download the alt.binaries newsgroups to your computer with a program such as binary vortex or quadsucker/news.
